Fads are Fickle

I guess I’ve known this for some time, but fads are fickle.  They come and they go quicker than an American Idol winner’s fame.  Back in the day, it was TMNT, baseball cards, pogs and tight roll pants.  That was back in my day anyway.  After that, came the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, yo-yo’s, Pokemon and that lame Internet thing (I don’t think it will last).

I was reminded by being by teenagers how uncool I am.  I’m ok with that.  Does that make me more cool?  I look around today, and I see new fads.  Vintage t-shirts, punk shoes, high sierra backpacks and other cool laptop cases come and go.  Accessories can dominate and move out quickly.

I watched a documentary recently on what “cool” is.  It was all about these marketers who did research with teens to find out what was cool, so they could market to the trend setters.  The ironic thing is that is soon as they find out what it is and market it, they kill it.  Rebellion to the ‘cool’ becomes the new cool.  Fickle.
