Superheroes

I got to do a club talk on Monday on the Resurrection, and I used the theme of superheroes.  It was freaking awesome!  My basic premise was that every superhero of all time, whether the story is from movies, comic books, cartoons, tv, mythology or whatever, are plagiarists of Jesus.  There is only one true superhero story, and it is the resurrection on Easter Sunday.  Everything else is a variation of it.

I asked everyone, “why do we like superheroes so much?”  Millions of people go to the movies to watch X-Men, Batman, Spiderman, Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Superman and others.   Some answers I got are that they are strong, brave, courageous, have cool powers, are sacrificial, battle evil, are studly and good looking, have great love stories, and lots of other cool things.  But the biggest reason I think we love superheroes is that they always WIN!  Not only that, but we get to share in the Victory.   At the root of all humans is the desire to be part of a bigger Victory, and what gives us a greater opportunity to do that then the empty tomb?

The Resurrection allows us to be a part of Victory in real life.  It allows us to overcome what scares all of us the most … Death.  So, if you ever wonder why little boys love to play with Ben 10 action figures and Naruto merchandise, or why little girls love to play with these, it’s because we all as humans are hard wired to want to be part of a bigger story.  We want to be invincible.  We want to beat death.  We want Victory!  And in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, we can have it.
